Making Connections: Embracing Artistic Kinship at the View Arts Center

The Art of Craft Exhibit Opening Reception

View Art Center

The air buzzed with inspiration at the View Arts Center in Old Forge, New York.  I was there to showcase my wood sculptures at the opening of the "Art of the Craft" exhibit. This exhibition “showcases artists and craftspeople working in any craft medium whose work exemplifies excellence in craftsmanship, design, and innovative use of the materials. The Art of Craft focuses on the use of materials, skill, workmanship, design, and innovative works.” While I appreciated the admiration for my work, the highlight of my evening was interacting with many incredibly talented artists, each with their unique stories and crafts.

On opening night, I was surrounded by individuals whose passion for their craft was infectious. Conversations told of dedication, innovation, and sheer love for art. Woodworkers, painters, potters, and textile artists—their talent was awe-inspiring, and each brought their distinctive flair to the gathering.

A couple of classy, small, wood-sided purses made by Sharon and Mark Diebolt of Hammill Diebolt Studios were displayed right next to my pieces.  As soon as my wife, Sarah, saw them, she pointed to one and said, “I want that!”  That's never happened since Sarah always thinks over something before buying it. They were just that nice!

Making Meaningful Connections at the Exhibition

What struck me most was the immediate connection among the artists. There was a real understanding and appreciation for the dedication and countless hours focused on honing our respective crafts. Sharing anecdotes, techniques, and even occasional mishaps made it feel like we were a gathering of old friends.

The conversations and interactions were not just enjoyable but quite educational. Insights exchanged were invaluable, offering new perspectives and ideas to incorporate into my artistic journey. Witnessing fellow artists' creativity added inspiration for my own craft.

For example, Dave Eichorn of Eichorn Woodworking has several striking pieces of furniture at the show.  We shared ideas the night of the opening and have been in contact several times.  Soon, we will be getting together again at our studios. Spending time with exceptional people like Dave is a big part of what makes this work so interesting.

My experiences with great art centers typically happen in metropolitan areas. The fact that View Art Center doesn’t fit that mold is, to me, part of its attraction. The View is a gem in a small Adirondack Mountain town. It is a place worth visiting, and the Art of the Craft exhibit is a perfect reason.  It will be on display through March 23, 2024. Beautiful art for life well lived,
